Ancient Roman ritual procession honouring a general who had won a major battle and killed at least 5,000 of the enemy. Senators and magistrates were followed by sacrificial animals, captured loot, and captives in chains. The general, in a purple-and-gold tunic, rode in a chariot, holding a laurel branch in his right hand and an ivory sceptre in his left, while a slave held a golden crown over his head. Lastly came the soldiers, who sang songs. Under the empire only the emperor and members of his family celebrated triumphs.

triumph, at Rome, the celebratory procession of a victorious Roman general from the Campus Martius outside the city walls to the temple of Jupiter Capitolinus. It was Etruscan in origin, and was regulated by strict rules of a religious nature. To be granted a triumph it was at first necessary for the general to hold a magistracy with imperium (even Scipio Africanus had been denied a triumph after his victories in Spain through not holding a regular magistracy), to have won a great victory over a foreign enemy, with at least 5, 000 of the enemy killed, and to have brought home at least a token army to show that the war was won. Later, holding a regular magistracy was not a prerequisite (see POMPEY), but the other requirements meant that a triumph was a fairly rare event. Under the empire only the emperor could celebrate a triumph; the last to do so was Diocletian in 302. Preceded by his lictors the triumphator, richly dressed and wreathed in bay, was carried on a four-horse chariot, a slave murmuring to him words to avert the possible ill consequences of outstanding success such as ‘remember you are mortal’. The army shouted ‘io triumphe’ and also sang rude songs (see FESCENNINE VERSES). The procession was joined by the magistrates and senators, captives, spoils, and sacrificial animals. At the temple of Jupiter Capitolinus the general made sacrifice and surrendered his bays to the god.

When a triumph was disallowed an ovatio was usually granted. This was a less spectacular form of triumph, the general entering Rome on foot or on horseback rather than in a chariot. The last recorded ovatio was in AD 47.
