Triumph was created and puppeteered by former Conan O'Brian staff writer, Robert Smigel. Most of the insults are improvised in accordance to the situation.

It is said that Triumph was preparing a remote report for the Tonight Show. He was down at the Bonnaroo Arts and Music Festival.

MTV used to have a show with two talking dogs called "Triumph, the Insult Comic Dog." The dog also appeared in a variety of music videos.
