U.S. Ski Team Skiing

Games: U.S. Ski Team Skiing
  • Release Date: 1980
  • Genre: Sports
  • Style: Skiing

Game Description

U.S. Ski Team Skiing lets you and up to five of your friends hit the slopes. There are two types of race courses included: downhill and slalom. Along with the type of course you can also select 1 of 15 grades of steepness for the course.

During the downhill course you will want to go as fast as you can. Jump moguls, avoid trees, and get through the gates as you attempt to post the fastest time. Slalom is a longer course and requires tighter control, as the gates are closer together.

Using the jump and edge buttons will help players to avoid obstacles and perform a precision run.

Review: Overall

U.S. Ski Team Skiing does a good job of representing the sport. Racing down a hill on skis is more fun than I thought it would be.

Up to six players can play by alternating turns. Definitely the more people you have the more fun it is. Each player gets three heats and their fastest time counts. The controls consist of side buttons used to make sharp turns and to perform jumps. Your skier can turn in all directions but if you cause them to turn completely around they will fall over. You view your skier from the front as they move straight down the screen.

Downhill skiing includes moguls which are the only items that you need to jump over. Jumping is not difficult but if you miss the jump the skier will fall down and cost you time. The slalom course does not have any jumps but the gates are much closer together. Trying to make every gate is difficult. When you miss a gate you receive time penalties.

The steepness of the hill is what will decide your time. You can select 15 different grades of steepness. While starting slow is a good idea there is no need to go as low as the #1 setting, the smallest angle. Here your skier is so slow that it is frustrating. Somewhere between 8-12 is probably the ideal steepness after you learn the controls.

Graphics look really good. Beginning at the top of the hill you can see mountains in the distance. As you go down a course the complete background is white representing the snow. Trees and gates dot the surface as do some moguls. Gates will change color when you go through them too. Sounds are also nicely done. A constant scraping of the skis against the snow is heard when your skier is moving. Each crash has its own effect as well. As you reach the bottom of the hill the crowd noise even gets loud.

U.S. Ski Team Skiing is a lot of fun but will get repetitive after a while. Two courses don't keep the game interesting for long enough. Still, with some friends the competition can be a lot of fun.
