University of Bristol is one of the original six "red brick" universities established in industrial cities of the UK during the Victorian era. The university in south west England traces its roots to 1876 as the University College of Bristol. It took its current name in 1908 and received its charter in 1909. Winston Churchill was the school's third chancellor and several Nobel Laureates have taught on its faculty. The university, with more than 15,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students, remains one of the top research and teaching institutions in the UK. It has some 34 academic departments (ranging from the arts and sciences to medicine, engineering, social sciences and law) and 15 research centers.
