An exercise, usually performed on a special machine, in which the resistance varies throughout the range of movement of the muscles involved. The ability of the muscles of a particular joint system to exert a force changes as the angles of the joint change. Thus the amount of resistance that can be moved is limited by the weakest point in the range of movement. Variable resistance exercise machines adjust the resistance to the muscle's ability to exert a force. It is claimed that these machines bring about a faster and greater increase of strength through the whole range of movement than exercises using a constant resistance.
