Violet (Balestreri) Archer

(b Montreal, 24 April 1913). Canadian composer. She studied with Clarke and Champagne at the McGill Conservatorium (1932-6), with Bartók in New York (1942) and Hindemith at Yale, and has pursued a career as a university teacher in the USA and Canada. Her two European teachers have had most influence on her music, which covers most genres; she has also been occupied with Canadian folksong.
