Vision training

Medical Encyclopedia: Vision Training

Definition

Vision training, also known as vision therapy or orthoptics, consists of a variety of programs to enhance visual performance. It includes treatments for focusing, binocularity, and eye movement problems. Vision training is generally provided by an optometrist (O.D.).

Description

Vision therapy is individually tailored to the subject and the discovered problems. It can be a lengthy process with many variations that requires repetition until eye muscles, coordination, reflexes, habits, and the way the brain handles visual input are all retrained. Each program will be individualized. The patient should be aware of the time involved for treatment. Treatment can be from several weeks to several months depending upon the condition. Some insurance plans may cover vision training.

Vision training (see also visual therapy or vision therapy) is the training of visual perception and recognition, and is used throughout the optical world as a method of training the eye. First conceived in the US, as a method of increasing the performance of fighter pilots by the US Airforce, it has now been transferred into the private sector. Vision training has many different uses, such as; Dyslexia correction, sports vision and learning help. Although the latter is primarily used in the US, the other two are becoming popular in the UK. Currently there is no governmental support for dyslexia or sports vision enhancements. However many universities are now providing grants towards the cost for their students. Companies are starting to produce vision training programs for baseball players, some even creating training programs.[1] Most practitioners of VT are also members of either the OEP (Optometric Extension Program Foundation) or the COVD (College of Optometrists in Vision Development).
