Visual editors are editing programs which display the text being edited on the screen as it is being edited, as opposed to line-oriented editors (such as ed, ex and edlin).
The term is generally used in discussing character mode, as opposed to GUI applications. All GUI editors are visual editors, but not all character mode editors are.
