Vladimir Nazor (born May 30, 1876 in Postira, Brač – died June 19, 1949 in Zagreb) was the first President of the People's Republic of Croatia (President of the Presidium of the People's Assembly). He was also a famous writer, translator, and communist politician.
Nazor acquired much literary popularity in Croatia writing about folk legends and stories. One of his main works is the extensive novel Pastir Loda ("Loda the Shepherd"). The work describes the history of his native island of Brač as told by Loda, a faun, and one of the last of its kind on the island. The tale Veli Jože is also popular: it features a helpful and good-natured giant named Jože, living in the area around the town of Motovun (Inner Istria). On December 30, 1941, Nazor became a member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts by government decree.[1]
During World War II, Nazor joined the Partisans and became a close associate of Josip Broz Tito's. After the war, he became the first president of the People's Republic of Croatia's Parliament in the Federal People's Republic of Yugoslavia.
Nazor wrote over 500 sonnets. He is buried in Mirogoj Cemetery.[2]
Nazor was the first head of state of the People's Republic of Croatia.
