Valentina Tereshkova (born 1937) was the first woman in space,
and flew the Vostok 6 spacecraft for three days in June, 1963.
Vostok 6 flew at the same time as Vostok 5, piloted by male
cosmonaut Valery Bykovsky, who launched before Tereshkova but
landed afterward.
