Also, wade into. Plunge into, begin or attack resolutely and energetically, as in She waded into that pile of correspondence. This idiom transfers entering water to beginning some action. [Mid-1800s]


 

In Yorkshire, Wade was a giant who built Mulgrave Castle, while his wife Bell built Pickering Castle; they also built ‘Wade's Causey’ to link the two (it is actually a Roman road). Bell owned a huge cow; a whale's jawbone over a metre long was displayed as this cow's rib at Mulgrave Castle in the 18th century. Wade was supposed to have been buried at Barnby, where two standing stones marked the grave (only one now remains). The name is that of an early Germanic hero, father of Wayland (Westwood, 1985: 343-6).
