  3. To put aside or off temporarily; defer.

means 'to give up (a right or claim) voluntarily', as in waiving an immunity or waiving formalities. It is not formally confused with the more familiar verb wave except in phrasal verbs such as waive aside and waive away (= to put aside as if with the wave of the hand), which are incorrect (☒ I cannot waive away all the teaching of history).
