Biography

In films from 1943, pugnacious American character actor Wally Cassell was afforded star billing for the first time in The Story of GI Joe (1945). As Private Dondaro, Cassell spent half of his time searching for his ethnic roots in war-torn Italy, and the other half seeking out wine, women and more wine. His other war-related filmic efforts included Sands of Iwo Jima (1949) and Flying Leathernecks (1951). He later appeared in westerns, then worked steadily during the late-1950s gangster-movie cycle, playing such raffish characters as Cherry Nose in I Mobster (1959). Wally Cassell was married to musical performer Marcy Maguire. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Wally Cassell (born March 3, 1915) is an American character actor. He was born Oswaldo Castellano in Agrigento, Sicily, and went to the USA at the age of two. He began his film career in 1942 and frequently appeared in small uncredited roles. His films include Sands of Iwo Jima, Flying Leathernecks, Until They Sail, The Story of G.I. Joe, and Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo. He later appeared in a number of television series such as Rawhide, The Untouchables and The Beverly Hillbillies. He retired from acting in 1964 and later became a successful businessman.

According to Wally, when he visited the Hollywood producer who would start his career, Mickey Rooney was in the producer's office. When the producer said "Oswaldo Castellano" wouldn't make a good actor's name, Mickey Rooney said, "Well, then make it Wally Cassell". And that was it.
