(b Prague, 1 May 1918; d Berkeley, 25 March 1980). British conductor. He studied with Suk and Hába and later with Szell. He conducted in Prague (début in La traviata, 1934) but left in 1938 for England, where he played the piano in the Czech Trio, becoming conductor of the Scottish (National) Orchestra, 1946-52. He conducted the Victoria SO in Melbourne, the Toronto SO (1956-65; he founded the NYO of Canada in 1958) and the St Louis SO (1968-75). His sound musicianship was supported by an eagerness in exploring the orchestral repertory.
