This is probably a diminutive of Wampus Cat . One assumes this is pronounced (Wompuss Cat) rather like the sound of amp in SWAMP. May well reside in Swampy areas. it is supposedly a demonic cross between a mountain Lion and an attractive woman, but with a Demonic bent. Could also refer to any large or freakish cat- like the attractive and rare Grey Tigers with white undersides, looking like an enlarged conventional wild cat. Wampus Cat- I like the sound of that!

My grandmother, who was raised in what is now the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, always referred to the female genitalia as a "wampus kitty."

My late grandfather, father, and uncles said a "wampus kitty" was the absolute meanness animal in the world. They said it had two mouths, one at both ends, and no way to go to the restroom! Which was why it was so mean.

The Wampus cat. It is not known how the name arose, mispronunciation of Rumpus, maybe, given the wild ways of the beast, maybe a Swamp environment, rare with US felines thought Jaguars like the water. Wampus Cat has a mysterious sound like that Mystery Surf dragster of the sixties. A good hot rod for the Beach Boys?
