The Washington House of Representatives is home to 98 members, two per district, who are elected to two-year terms. The governing body meets annually in January, for 105 days during odd-numbered years and 60 days during even numbered years. The Governor can call a special 30-day session or the members themselves can call a special session with a two-thirds vote of both houses. The House leader is the Speaker, usually elected from the party that holds the majority. The House, along with its counterpart, the Washington Senate, establishes state law by working through more than 30 committees, commissions, and task forces. Washington's House of Representatives has an annual budget of about $66.1 million.

The Washington House of Representatives is the lower house of the Washington State Legislature, the legislature of the U.S. State of Washington. It is composed of 98 Representatives from 49 districts, each of which are multimember constituencies represented by two members. All members of the House are elected to a two year term without term limits. The House meets at the Legislative Building in Olympia.

Leadership of the House

The Speaker of the House presides over the House of Representatives. The Speaker is elected by the majority party caucus followed by confirmation of the full House through the passage of a House Resolution. As well as presiding over the body, the Speaker is also the chief leadership position, and controls the flow of legislation. Other House leaders, such as the majority and minority leaders, are elected by their respective party caucuses relative to their party's strength in the House.

The current Speaker of the House is Democrat Frank Chopp of the 43rd Legislative District (Seattle). The Majority Leader is Lynn Kessler of the 24th Legislative District (Clallam, Jefferson, Grays Harbor counties). The Republican Minority Leader is Richard DeBolt of the 20th Legislative District (Centralia, Chehalis).
