The file extension mp3 means that the file is an audio file, and is usually some sort of music file. However, mp3 can also be used for sound recordings that are done for businesses, and many other things as well.

WAV is a sound format. All of the system sounds in Windows are in WAV format, like the startup and event/warning sounds. If you have a microphone, you could also record your speech or singing, or anything else. Another sound format is CDA. This is the format in which compact discs are recorded. WMM (Windows Movie Maker) should let you import .wav files since it is a file name extension (format) used by the program:

aif, .aifc, .aiff, .asf, .au, .mp2, .mp3, .mpa, .snd, .wav, and .wma

Make sure the file is actually a .wav file. Right-click the audio file and choose Properties from the drop-down menu. Note the extension and program currently opening the file type by default.
