Mr Wee Cho Yaw (Chinese: 黄祖耀; pinyin: Huáng Zǔyào）aged 76, is the incumbent Chairman of the United Overseas Bank Group (UOB), one of the leading financial institutions in Asia, providing a wide-ranging services in finance, supported by its global network of branches and associates.
Wee Cho Yaw joined the Board of Directors of the then United Chinese Bank (the now United Overseas Bank, UOB) in 1958. He was appointed Managing Director of the Bank two years later, and when his father Wee Kheng Chiang, founder of the then United Chinese Bank (UCB), retired in 1974, Wee succeeded him as Chairman of the Bank. His son Wee Ee Chong succeeds him as CEO of UOB
Under Wee's leadership, the bank has grown into one of the leading banks in Asia, and is constantly expanding its banking subsidiaries and services both regionally and locally. Despite his heavy business schedule, Wee finds time to engage in community service.
To recognise his contributions to the community, the Singapore Government awarded him the Public Service Star in 1971, and by his own account, Wee was named Businessman of the Year for his outstanding corporate success in 1990.
In 2006, for his contributions to the banking sector. He was presented with the inaugural Credit Suisse-Ernst & Young Lifetime Achievement Award, which honours the accomplishments of Singapore's pioneer entrepreneurs.
