Columbia Encyclopedia: Wheatley, Henry Benjamin,
1838–1917, English bibliographer and antiquarian, a founder of the Early English Text Society and of the Index Society. Wheatley's work on the indexing of books, How to Make an Index (1902), is a classic. He edited Pepys's diary (10 vol., 1893–99) and wrote Samuel Pepys and the World He Lived In (1880).
