Plot

This thriller takes place in Blue Bay, Florida, where social-climbing guidance counselor Sam Lombardo (Matt Dillon) is indifferent to teen-socialite Kelly Van Ryan (Denise Richards), who retaliates by accusing him of rape, an accusation that leads to his suspension by the school and a rejection from the country club. He can't afford a big attorney, so he hires shrewd Ken Bowden (Bill Murray), while Kelly's mom, Sandra Van Ryan (Theresa Russell), Sam's former lover, gets a platoon of top lawyers. Trailer-trash Suzie Toller (Neve Campbell) backs up Kelly's claim and additional plot twists and turns develop. The seldom-seen Carrie Snodgrass (Diary of a Mad Housewife) has a supporting role in this film. ~ Bhob Stewart, All Movie Guide

Review

As trashy as they come, and just about as irresistible, John McNaughton's steamy Florida noir would be downright laughable if its professionalism and stamp of authorship was not in evidence in every gorgeous frame. Stunningly photographed by Jeffrey L. Kimball, Wild Things tweaks the sensibilities in such a way that it almost seems old-fashioned. It delights in throwing twists and turns at the viewer, and surprisingly, virtually all of them are convincing and satisfying. The cast is wonderfully game here, with Matt Dillon and Neve Campbell effectively cast against type, and the inclusion of Bill Murray only points to the film's delirious tongue-in-cheek nature. Wild Things can honestly be called one of the '90s true neo-noirs, as it employs all of its conventions (double-crossing, femme fatales, etc.), but with a refreshing sense of irony. Though the film didn't do bang-up business at the box office, it has developed a well-deserved cult of fans who have discovered its snaky pleasures, such as its overt sexiness and a willingness to bend the rules and give the viewer a really good time. ~ Jason Clark, All Movie Guide

Plot

Two female students—wealthy, popular Kelly Van Ryan (Denise Richards) and goth trailer dweller Suzie Toller (Neve Campbell)—accuse Sam Lombardo (Matt Dillon), a high school guidance counselor, of rape. Sam employs a lawyer named Kenneth Bowden (Bill Murray). During the trial, Bowden causes Suzie to reveal that Mr. Lombardo did not rape her and that Kelly fabricated the charges because she was in love with him and angry he slept with her mother. The trial humiliates Van Ryan and her entire family, enabling Bowden and Lombardo to negotiate a large settlement ($8.5 million), which Sam seemingly uses to retire peacefully. In reality, it is revealed that he, Suzie and Kelly planned the entire incident in order to gain the $8.5 million.

As police sergeant Ray Duquette (Kevin Bacon) becomes suspicious, Suzie becomes increasingly nervous and Sam worries that she will undermine their plan. Kelly and Suzie fight, with Kelly almost drowning Suzie, and then the two have a passionate affair in the pool. Sam and Kelly take her to the seaside, where Sam murders Suzie with a wine bottle. In the investigation into Suzie's disappearance, police find her blood and teeth by the ocean. Ray discovers that Sam is the killer and goes to Kelly's house to protect Kelly from Sam. However, Kelly remains suspicious of Ray. In the confrontation between Kelly and Ray, both are shot, Kelly fatally. Ray reports to authorities that she fired at him first, and that he was forced to shoot back in self-defense. Ray is discharged from the police force following this incident, while Sam spends time at a tropical resort. Sam goes to his room and finds Ray there — Ray and Sam had been collaborating the whole time.

They later go cruising in Sam's boat in the ocean, where Sam knocks Ray overboard. When Ray climbs back onboard, Suzie — alive and now with blonde hair -- appears, armed with a speargun. Ray pleads to Sam for help, to which Sam retorts, "you should not have killed Kelly", and Suzie shoots him with the speargun, killing him, and he falls into the water. As Sam relaxes, Suzie gives him a drink laced with poison before knocking him overboard. She sails the boat back to shore by herself.

A series of flashbacks explains the story. Suzie devised the plan, in which she wished to receive the money from the trial, as payback to her wealthy half-sister Sandra Van Ryan (Kelly's mother) for being scorned and abandoned by their father. Suzie also wanted to kill Ray in revenge for killing her friend, Davie, some time ago. She manipulated all the characters in the plot, making Sam seem the mastermind and faking her own death. She was underestimated because of her delinquency and poor background. Those who knew her say her IQ was "way up there" and, if she put her mind to it, "she could do anything." As for Kelly's death, Ray shot her first and then put a gun in her hand and made it appear that she had shot at him.

In the final scene, Bowden meets Suzie at a tropical resort and gives her the majority of the money, minus "his usual fee". As she walks off, he tells her to "be good".

Filming locations

Almost all the high school sequences, including many pool scenes, were filmed at Ransom Everglades school in Coconut Grove, Florida.

The sequel to the movie, 2004's Wild Things 2, never saw release in the theatres and went straight to video, as did a third film called Wild Things: Diamonds in the Rough (2005). The sequels recycle much of the plot, dialogue, and direction of the first film, albeit with different actors.

In February 2006, it was reported that Campbell and Richards will appear in Backstabbers, and producers are trying to get more of the original's cast to star as well.[1] Although Backstabbers would reportedly reunite members of the cast and crew of Wild Things, it would not be a sequel.[1] Backstabbers will go into production in late 2009 and will be released in 2011.

In June 2009, Sony started a production of the re-make starring Ashley Parker Angel, Marnette Patterson and Jillian Murray as the two lead characters. Release date TBC.[citation needed]
