The transmission of data via air waves. Wireless data includes paging, text messaging, e-mail, Web access and other specialized data applications and specifically excludes voice transmission. Wireless data typically implies transmission to a mobile terminal such as a smartphone or PDA; however, there are "fixed wireless" applications that transmit over the air between stationary objects.
