Games: World Games

Game Description

From EPYX, publishers of various olympic games such as Summer Games and Winter Games, comes World Games. Options available are: compete in all events, compete in some events, compete in one event, practice one event, and view world records. World Games contains events that each take place in a different country, hence the title. Events include: weightlifting(Russia), barrel jumping(Germany), cliff diving(Mexico), slalom skiing(France), log rolling(Canada), bull riding(United States), caber toss(Scotland), and sumo wrestling(Japan).

Weightlifting contains two competitions, the "snatch" and the "clean and jerk." Barrel jumping takes place on the ice where players choose a number of barrels, build up as much speed as they can, and attempt to clear the barrels. Cliff diving requires players to clear the jagged rock during a 118-foot decent. Slalom skiing is an event where a skiier races against a clock while making sharp turns around flags. Log rolling is a test of balance as you stand on a floating log and begin walking for as long as you can. During bull riding a player must stay on a bull for eight seconds. Caber toss has competitors attempting to throw a 19 foot long tree trunk as far as they can. Sumo wrestling pits two large men against each other in a clay-surfaced ring.

Review: Overall

The olympic games by EPYX are some of the most enjoyable games on the Commodore 64 and World Games is no different. Where else can you ride a bull, throw a caber, and jump over barrels all in the same game?

Almost every event has simple controls that can be learned after a couple tries. Sumo wrestling is the only event that takes some getting used to. Becoming good at every event may not be hard but the replay value for the game is still quite high.

Simple controls allow all ages to compete against each other and, with the ability of eight players to play together, World Games is great for parties and for families. The world records, one of which is kept for each event, provide gamers with something to shoot for every time they play the game. Options that allow you to choose between practice and competition as well as the number of events to compete makes the game very customizable.

None of the events are very long so that when playing with a group everyone gets a turn without having to wait more than a minute. Most events give multiple chances to try and complete them. This adds to the enjoyment as you get to see what other players have accomplished and therefore know if you have to add that extra 5kg to win at weightlifting.

Graphically EPYX always gets the job done. Small details such as the weightlifter's facial expression or the athlete getting hammered into the ground after dropping the caber on his head all add to the game immensely. Sound effects don't falter anywhere either. Effects match every on-screen action and digitized clips of each country's national anthem is provided.

World Games contains simple controls, great graphics, and competition for eight people which all adds up to a complete package.

The World Games, first held in 1981, are an international multi-sport event, meant for sports that are not contested in the Olympic Games. The World Games are organised and governed by the International World Games Association (IWGA), under the patronage of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Some of the sports that were on the program of the World Games eventually made it as Olympic sports (such as triathlon) or have been Olympic sports in the past (like tug of war). Participation in past World Games is included in the evaluation criteria used to select new Olympic sports adopted by the IOC on August 12, 2004. However, with the current position of the IOC to limit the Olympic Games to 10,500 participants, it is unlikely that many of the World Games sports will be elevated to the Olympic sports.

Some of the sports that are currently held at the World Games are orienteering, body building, powerlifting, finswimming, squash, netball, water skiing, casting, etc. The sports that are included in the World Games are limited by the facilities available in the host city; no new facilities may be constructed for the games. Typically, between 25 and 35 sports are contested at any particular World Games. Sports that have been classified as "invitational" are still played, but no medals are awarded. Even if some sports are official sports of the IWGA, they can be classified as invitational by the hosting city.
