Any member of Congress who has been recognized by the presiding officer and is speaking may yield the floor to another speaker—or refuse to yield. If other members wish to interrupt the speaker, they will address the chair and ask, “Will the gentleman [or gentlewoman] from [the speaker's state] yield?” This device enables two members to engage in a colloquy, or back-and-forth debate, over a particular point. If the speaker wishes to continue his remarks after such an interruption, the speaker will stipulate that by yielding for a question, he is not giving up the right to regain the floor.
Speakers also yield as a courtesy to other members who may have an amendment to introduce or a short statement to make and do not wish to remain for long in the chamber.

In political elections, a losing candidate may yield to the other candidate. This process is known as concession. Preferably this is to be done after the votes are counted.
In traffic, drivers entering a larger road are usually required to yield to cars in the larger road to avoid a fiery collision.
