No snobby restaurant critics here. ZAGAT (rhymes with "the cat") Survey publishes restaurant guides based on the reviews of more than 300,000 connoisseurs who take part in its surveys on restaurants in some 100 cities worldwide. The company's approach separately rates the distinct qualities of a restaurant (food, decor, service, and cost) based on a 30-point scale. ZAGAT information is available in books, online, and on mobile devices. The firm was founded in 1979 when husband-and-wife co-chairs Tim and Nina Zagat, both New York City-based Yale-educated lawyers, invited avid diners to rate and review the restaurants they visited. Investors include General Atlantic Partners and Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers.

Wikipedia: Zagat Survey

Zagat Survey (pronounced za-GAT)[1] was established by Tim and Nina Zagat in 1979 as a way to collect and correlate the ratings of restaurants by diners. For their first guide, covering New York City, the Zagats surveyed their friends. As of 2005, the Zagat Survey included 70 cities, with reviews based on the input of 250,000 individuals reporting over the years. In addition to restaurants, Zagat guides rate hotels, nightlife and shopping, zoos, music, movies, theater and golf. The guides are sold in book form, as software for personal digital assistants and mobile phones, and by paid subscription on the Web. Car manufacturer Honda included Zagat information in the GPS-based navigation systems in some of their models available in the United States, including the Acura MDX, the Acura TSX and the Honda Accord.

Rating system

The ratings are on a 30-point scale, covering food, decor, service, and cost. In addition to numeric scores, the survey also includes a short descriptive paragraph that incorporates reviewers' comments about the restaurant.
