Confirmation

The Zune HD was confirmed by Microsoft for release in Fall 2009. A trailer appeared on the Xbox LIVE Video Service on June 1, 2009, during the E3 2009 Microsoft Press Conference. They announced that the current Zune Marketplace and Xbox LIVE Video Service will be merged to create Zune Video, bringing the Zune brand to Xbox LIVE in 7 countries[8]; the United States, United Kingdom, France, Italy, Germany, Ireland, and Spain. It is the first PMP with a built-in HD Radio tuner. It includes an HD video output, multi-touch OLED screen with advanced lighting and capacity effects, Wi-Fi, and a browser based on Internet Explorer Mobile 6 optimized for multi-touch use.[9] The Zune HD's marketplace will also include games and applications.[10] Moreover, Zune HD consumers will get access to Zune[11] Marketplace Catalog having around 6 million songs at disposal for $14.99 a month. Also they can log into Zune.net and stream full albums and tracks through a computer’s browser, using Microsoft's own Silverlight Web browser plugin.

Features

Apps

Apps available for the Zune HD: Twitter, Calculator, MSN Weather, and Piano. Microsoft has confirmed that a Facebook app for Zune will be available soon. For the next update Microsoft XNA Gaming Studio will be putting up an Apps Store. An extension to the Microsoft XNA framework providing development support for the Zune HD was released on September 16, 2009.[19] The Zune PC Software can be used for adding apps to the Zune HD.[20]

Games

Games for the Zune HD include Project Gotham Racing: Ferrari Edition, Vans Sk8: Pool Service, Checkers, Sudoku, Space Battle 2, Lucky Lanes Bowling, Goo Splat, Chess, Shell Game... of the Future, Hexic and Audiosurf(TM) Tilt. Indie titles written with XNA are also available from multiple sources. Integration with the Xbox 360 has been reported to be under development. Games, Gamertags and many other Xbox 360 features are to be incorporated into Zune HD to utilize the Tegra processor inside and compete as a gaming device.

On PGR: Ferrari Edition, a reviewer said "That Tegra chip is no joke -- the graphics in PGR: Ferrari Edition are easily on par with the PSP and quite better, the Zune HD is possibly better than the PSP Go in the gaming section using the following features: intricate textures, high-quality reflections, smooth framerates, and HD gaming resolution"[21]

Web browser

The browser features favorites and Bing search. The keyboard can be accessed by swiping up from the bottom of the screen. The keyboard also has portrait and landscape orientation, with the keys bulging around the user's finger when touched. The web browser has pinch and stretch for zooming and page reorientation due to the built in accelerometer.[22] As of launch, the Zune HD's web browser does not support flash applications, such as video playback on YouTube.

With the 4.3 firmware update, customers can change the Internet settings to display the browser optimized for a Mobile device or for a PC experience. In addition, Customers can now enable “auto correct” and “auto capitalize” when using the keyboard to enter information, making it easier to type content into the browser.

HomeBrew

There is also an active "homebrew" community of XNA developers.

Release

Zune HD has been well received in the marketplace. Within a week of release, Best Buy, Dell, Amazon and Newegg reported the Zune HD had been sold out. Microsoft has recently stated that the Zune HD will be available to the Canadian market on February 10th, 2010 [23]
