There are basically four different forces in nature: the strong nuclear force, the weak force, electrical/magnetic forces (the two are closely related), and gravitation. Each force has its own set of rules.

The electrical force has an infinite range (of course it gets weaker at greater distances), it can be attractive or repulsive, and it acts on a different sets of particles.
