Xbox live cards work on both kinds of xbox.
To buy content on xbox live you need to purchase Microsoft points. These points can be purchased on xbox live or you can buy prepaid cards from store that will give you so many points. The conversion between points and dollars (US) is 80 points = $1
You never buy Minecraft in any physical form, the only thing you could do in a store is buy one of the prepaid download cards that they sell for XBox live games. You'd still download the game in the same way as if you'd just bought it from Xbox Live though.
