1978 Suzuki gs750 the bike will only start when i hold my hand over the intake side of carbs and when i stop choking it the bike dies If i don't manually choke it it does not fire but why?

if the bike bike has set up for a while clean carbs take them apart and clean the jets gas goes bad and clogs the pasages up
