The 1996 Ford Explorer overdrive sensor can be found on the right hand side of the transmission. The overdrive sensor will be near the front of the transmission.

The overdrive ON / OFF switch is located on the end of your gearshift lever ( P R N etc. )
If its a automatic it should have a 4 speed overdrive (4R100)

The 1996 F150 owners manual shows : Both the Mazda and ZF ( 5 speed overdrive manual transmissions ) take Motorcraft MERCON automatic transmission fluid , and the ZF (5 speed overdrive manual transmission) used with the 7.3 L diesel takes Motorcraft SYNTHETIC MERCON

Overdrive is the normally allowed position in a Ford Explorer automatic transmission , once the vehicle speed is fast enough ( my Ford Explorer is 50 MPH ) the automatic transmission will automatically shift into overdrive
I'm not sure -- mine is having the same problem. All other gears work fine, overdrive just slips. Checking into a overdrive control module -- friend mechanic suggested this may be the problem. He said it's a cheap fix $15-20
