King Leopold 2 (born Louis Philippe Marie Victor) was a ruler of a colony in Africa, which is now called Zaire.He used slave labor and torture to extract raw materials (mostly rubber) and build his personal fortune. By 1908 criticism of his rule forced his withdrawal as sovereign and the region was annexed to Belgium.
Leopold II of Belgium was incredibly abusive and barbaric in the way he went about governing the Belgian Congo (the colony that is now the independent country called the Democratic Republic of the Congo).

To set up a Colony controlled personally by himself. Through this he could exploit the territory for his personal advantage.

Leopold the Second was the King of Belgium from 1865 to 1909. He was infamous for running the Congo Free State ( later Belgian Congo ) as his personal fief. He employed mercenaries to police the colony. There was a high cost in human lives. Joseph Conrad wrote a novel about it called " Heart of Darkness".
