In the US "short scale" a billion is one thousand million. (1000 x 1,000,000 or 1 x 109).

Larger named numbers also increase by thousands.

In the long scale used in some parts of Europe, a billion is a million million.

(1,000,000 x 1,000,000 or 1 x 1012)

Other larger numbers increase by millions, rather than thousands.

(1 trillion = 1 million billion)
