Same exact problem. I'm NOT a mechanic. No fluids due to a intake manifold gasket. Replaced. Began running rough, bucking, low rpm's. Replaced 2 sensors. No help. Had to replace motor. Water in oil. The head either cracked or the warped, therefore leaking water into the oil. Once the oil pan becomes full of water and oil, this created too much pressure for the pistons to move in the cylenders properly. When this happens water will also go into the cylenders on top of the pistons and will not let the plugs fire properly. You should have smelled coolent in the exhaust. A head can be removed and fixed if it wasn't cracked too bad or warped too much. Depending on the type of motor, this could cost as much as a new replacement motor. Or depending on the auto shop might have been a lot cheaper than a new motor.
When 1990 Honda is running cooling fan does not come on but comes on when engine is off and I thermostat and temperature switch changed?"
I changed the water pump and head gaskets and thermostat. Still overheated. I just took the thermostat out and it's running fine. Who knows!!
Get a Bigger Radiator
Thermostat may be bad; or you may have a bad temperature sending unit You may have blown a head gasket when it overheated if you continued to drive the truck.
I have a 2001 Dodge 3500 that was not getting up to operating temperature. I changed the thermostat and that fixed it. I guess the thermostat was stuck open.
The thermostat controls only the temperature of the water.
Replace it with the exact same temperature thermostat as the one you removed. Do not run the engine without a thermostat. The thermostat is required to keep the engine running at the optimum temperature that will give the best performance and mileage. If it is overheating running it without a thermostat is not the solution.
For a 2.4 litre engine, where the pressure cap is that is the thermostat housing..if you try to remove the pressure cap (in cold temperature only) you will see the thermostat..A damaged thermostat can be diagnosed when an engine running is at above normal temperature by squeezing the radiator hose connected to the thermostat housing..if there is no coolant running in it the thermostat is close then replace it.
possibly the water pump
Is you Geo Tracker overheating or the temperature is running almost hot then you need to change you thermostat
Your thermostat is probably stuck open - quite common - had to have my thermostat changed for the same reason (Helpfull)
It regulates the temperature of the water in the radiator and tells the fan when to switch on to start cooling or to switch off if its too cool. Engines have an optimum running temperature, and the Thermostat helps keep it at that.
