I am researching the same question. Our 2004 Explorer appears to be working perfectly. We can switch into 4X4 High or Low normally, however "4X4 High" light is flashing 8 times every two minutes.
I am told this indicates some failure of the 4X4 system, which can be related to the actuator that shifts the transaxle into Auto, High, or Low - or it can relate to a failure to connect to or receive data from one of the antilock brake sensors.
It can also mean a failure of the 4X4CM module, but if that happens NOTHING will work, which is not true in our case.
