Hey Great Questions, My 2002 envoy is doing the same thing right now. About a week ago it started... Hope u find out an aswer, so I can read it THANKS
The problem you described is with the ambient temperature sensor, located behind the grill. It is a small grey or black sensor, and it is a dealer only item. To replace it you will need to open your hood and remove the two screws located above the grill, then you can either pull the grill toward you and unplug the sensor or if you need more space you can pull up on the grill and take it out completely. Don't forget to unplug your head light washers.
Between the front grill and the radiator.
The ambient temperature sensor is located behind the front grill.
One of the gauges is reading out of the safe zone.

Coolant Temperature Sensor/Switch (For Computer)Engine, Left Front
A lot of times with the computerized niceities on vehicles "OC" means open cicut. Trace the wire and look for a broken/disconnected/or loose wire (it could be a live or active wire)) Open Circut on these units means that the sensor has failed. The above problem is correct, but the actual problem is a sensor behind the grill. It is grey or black in color, it is the ambient temperature sensor. The cost is about 60 bucks dealer only item. To get to this sensor you will have to remove the front grill there are six screws, you will also have to unplug the headlight washers if equiped. The whole process will take about ten minutes.
if wire are attached to the outside of it, it is a thermal air fuel meter.
Just turn it off auto and control it yourself. The outside temp sensor is broken and they are a lot so I would just adjust it myself.
The Ambient Temperature Sensor is located behind the grill and mounted to the radiator support with a "push in" connector. Remove the screws that attach the upper portion of the grill and pull the grill away from the vehicle enough to access the sensor.
