Have you run a diagnostic test? You can borrow, rent or buy a code scanner from most auto parts retailers. If the engine light is on it means the computer has a "code" that it wants to report.
No other code? Just "random multiple misfires"? That's odd. There should be some additional code along with the one you describe.
