According to the owners manual - transfer case fluid - Motorcraft MERCON ATF ( automatic Transmission Fluid )
The transfer case for a 4x4 is bolted to the rear of the transmission on your Ford Ranger
That's going to depend on your transfer case. If you have a manual transfer case, or an electronic transfer case with a neutral position, then all you have to do it put the transfer case in neutral. If not, then you'll have to remove the driveshafts in order to flat tow it without wrecking your transmission.
I did and there were no issues, I made sure trans was in neutral as well as the transfer case. I did hear about a friend who towed an auto in neutral without the transfer case in neutral and the transmission is bad now. You want the transmission in Park and the transfer case in neutral.
