Transmission Fluid

Transmission fluid acts as a lubricant for all the moving parts inside the car’s transmission. In an automatic transmission, it works as a coolant and transmits power from the engine to the transmission.

500 Questions

What happens if you accidentally pour transmission fluid into brake fluid?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Accidentally pouring transmission fluid into the brake fluid reservoir is a serious mistake and can have detrimental effects on your vehicle's braking system. Transmission fluid and brake fluid serve completely different purposes and have distinct properties.

Transmission fluid is designed for lubricating and cooling the transmission components, while brake fluid is crucial for the proper functioning of the braking system. Brake fluid is a hydraulic fluid that transmits force within the brake system, and it has specific properties to withstand high temperatures.

If transmission fluid is added to the brake fluid reservoir:

Loss of Brake Functionality: Transmission fluid is not suitable for use in the brake system, and it lacks the necessary properties for hydraulic braking. Mixing the two can compromise the integrity of the brake fluid, leading to a loss of braking functionality.

Damage to Brake Components: Brake seals, hoses, and other components are not designed to handle transmission fluid. The introduction of transmission fluid can lead to damage to these components, resulting in brake system failure.

Reduced Braking Performance: Transmission fluid may cause the brake fluid to become less effective, leading to reduced braking performance. This compromises the safety of the vehicle and increases the risk of accidents.

If such an error occurs, it is crucial to address it immediately:

Do Not Drive: Refrain from driving the vehicle as compromised brake functionality poses a significant safety risk.

Professional Inspection: Seek the assistance of a qualified mechanic to inspect and flush the entire brake system. Flushing involves removing the contaminated fluid and replacing it with the correct brake fluid.

Component Replacement: Depending on the severity of the contamination, brake components may need to be replaced to ensure the safety and reliability of the braking system.

In summary, mixing transmission fluid with brake fluid can lead to severe consequences, and it is essential to rectify the mistake promptly by seeking professional assistance to prevent safety hazards and potential damage to the vehicle.

How do you fix a transmission code 1744 on a 1997 Mazda 626?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

1999 Madza 626 transmission code 1744I have a 1999 Madza 626 that I bought less then a year ago with a rebuilt engine, and have had to replace the timing belt on it and now this Code 1744. It is the Torque Convertor clutch slipping. I am having the same problem and 2 different places said they had to research it. I called someone out of the phone book that I had taken a previous car to and he knew right away what it was. He said you can't feel it but it has something to do with when you go over a large hill and alitude the check engine light will come on, you can't feel it slipping but something inside is not right. You have a bad transmission, bottom line. I wouldn't mess around with it and get it fixed right away. I had another car with a bad transmission and don't want to get stuck again. Here is a link to a site that will tell you the same thing . I am taking my car in today and he said it is a 1 1/2 day job. They charge 275 to take it apart and apply that to any parts it will need. I will keep you up dated on my transmission. I suggest you find a transmission specialist in your area that can tell you right off hand what it is and you'll know he knows his stuff, anyone who says they need to research it doesn't know their transmissions.

I have a 1999 Mazda 626 with the CD4E transmission that had the engine code 1744. The transmission in my car would slip after the fluid was warm. My car had 123000 miles on it and had the transmission rebuilt once before. There are brass bushings inside this transmission that were worn out on my car. I bought a newer CD4E transmission from Ebay (40,000 miles) and put a shift kit in in with a new torque cnverter and new gaskets. The shift kit comes with drill bits to increase the size of the lub ports to increase oil flow to bushings. The previous rebuild was $1200 but obviously they did not change all the parts that needed changed or used the wrong parts. These transmissions are expensive and can be hard to find. I got one from a Ford Escape but had to use the old bell housing because the Ford Escape has a different starter mount. I was told they could not be interchanged but for me it worked.

How do you change transmission fluid on 2002 FatBoy?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Just changed the oil in my 2003 Fatboy for the first time. Here's what I discovered and accomplished: The drain plug is on the bottom right side just below the passenger footrest and suspension crossbar. use a 5/8" socket for the drain plug. The oil filler dipstick is protruding just below the front part of the seat on the same right hand side of the drain plug. Mine is a chrome cap about 2" in diameter. It is extremely helpful if you purchase the HD oil filter wrench available from most dealerships - it works really well with a sockett wrench for the oil filter. I also used Screamin Eagle 20W50 synthetic oil and by keeping a quart on hand you can use it for all three fluids on your bike according to the dealership which is convenient. The bike has a quantity of 3 quarts, however, it will not take three quarts as it's virtually impossible to remove all of the oil, so don't overfill. Put in 2.5 quarts, srartup bike for 30 seconds or so and the check the oil level on the dipstick. It will be about halfway on the markings cold and closer to the full mark when warmed up. What you need: oil filter three quartz of 20W50 screamin eagle synthetic oil new "O" ring for drain plug H.D. tool for oil filter is helpful ($20.00) Steps: Warm the oil up, go for a quick ride. Shut the bike down and remove the drain plug followed by the oil filler/dipstick cap. Ensure you have a drain pan lined up underneath. I got on the bike and held it upright until it stopped draining. With a drip pan under the location of the filter, remove it - as stated earlier for around $20.00 the H.D. tool for this works great. Located/accessed from the lower front of engine on the right side. Install new filter. Reinstall the drain plug with a new .60 cent "O" ring on the plug from your dealer. The .60 cents is good insurance against a leak. I coat the new "O" ring and the filter gasket with with a thin coat of new oil from my finger. Add the oil into the filler neck that dipstick/cap came from. This is a convenient and easy place to add oil and a funnel isn't really required. Remember not to overfill. About 2.5 quarts, start the bike and then check the dipstick again. Remember to have the bike upright and insert the cap all the way before checking again. Of course, wipe the dipstick prior to each check. Unless the oil is coletely warm, the level should not go to the top fill line. I hope this helps, I'm not a pro but I manage to successfully get these types of things done without incident. Jack from Maine

How do you change the coolant on a 2000 Infiniti I30?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

AS with most automobiles, there is a drain plug on the oil pan, so first you would drain the oil, and then replace the drain plug. The more difficult part with the I-30 is the oil filter, which is located just above the passenger side front tire, the access is somewhat tight, but that's where you will find it, I find it easier to access if I turn the wheels to the full right lock position, and I gain access from the front. Once you remove and replace the filter, you simply refill the Oil from the hole provided on the valve cover.

How do you fill transmission fluid in 2007 tundra?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Remove the transmission dip stick at back of engine normally on left side of engine just in front of the firewall. Use the longer funnel, usually about 12" in length. You can also use 2 small funnels, one in the dip tube and another small funnel just above it. This allows you to pour into small funnel safely and it will pour into the lower small funnel they are lined up. I believe you have to have the engine running while you check the level of the fluid. DO NOT OVER FILL AS IT WILL CAUSE DAMAGE TO TRANS.

Change the transmission oil in 2007 passat?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

VW recommends you NEVER change the tranny fluid. Most mechanics disagree, if you are going to keep the car beyond 100k, you should change the oil every 60k or less. I don't know the details, but you must use the tranny fluid recommended by VW. No other. You have to drop the tranny pan and let all the oil drain out. Replace the filter. Replace the pan. Add fluid. Do NOT use the "flush" method promoted by many shops. It can damage the tranny.

How many quarts of transmission fluid does a 1993 Ford Explorer need?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

You should put the same amount of fresh fluid in as you drain out of old fluid from your automatic transmission. Make sure the vehicle is parked on a level place. Then check the fluid level according to the owner's manual instructions, (on most vehicles with the engine idling, at normal operating temperature, and the transmission in "park") and if needed add fluid to bring it up to the "FULL HOT" mark on the dipstick. One additional point: Make sure you use the recommended fluid. There are several different fluids required by different vehicles.

Where do you add transmission fluid in a 1998 Jeep Cherokee?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The same place that you check the level of the transmission fluid. The tube that the dipstick goes in is so large so that the fluid will flow down it easily. However, you may need a special funnel, one that has a very long neck, in order to be able to get the fluid into the tube. These are sold at all auto parts stores, and many other places. Check the level frequently, to insure that you do not over fill the transmission.

How do you add transmission fluid to your '92 5-speed Geo?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Assuming this is an automatic transmission, the transmission dipstick tube is where you would add transmission fluid. After a drive and the engine and transmission are warmed up, put transmission in the park position, apply parking brake, leave engine running, exit vehicle, open hood, locate and remove transmission dipstick, wipe dipstick dry, reinsert dipstick completely into tube and remove again. Notice the level of fluid left on the dipstick, it should be within the marks indicated. Add the proper fluid as required thru the dipstick tube if needed.

If this vehicle has a standard transmission the fill plug would be located under the vehicle directly on the transmission. This would best be done on a lift. With vehicle up on a lift and level remove the fill plug from the side of the transmission. The fluid should be right at that level of the openning, add the proper fluid if necessary.

How do i fill the transmission fluid in a 2001 Honda Civic automatic?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

You have to check in the actual transmission. Jack the car up (make sure it's level or you won't get an accurate reading) then take out the bolt on the back of the tranny and put your finger in it. It should be almost level with the hole, if not than add some. You can do this with a bucket of transmission fluid and a pump attached to hose...or, simply run a hose from the transmission fluid container to the transmission, hold the bottle above the car, so you'll need a long hose, and let gravity do the work. Once it starts to spill out a tiny bit, then you know your set and just put the bolt back.

What do you do if the gear shift is stuck and car won't start?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Here are some experiences and solutions:

I have a Mercedes-Benz S500 and it was stuck in park and a MB tech told me to pump the break while hammering the shifter with a mallet and yanking the shifter down (all at the same time). I had my Dad continuously press the break while I hammered and yanked that blasted shifter down to Drive. As odd as that sounds, it works. But this is just temporary.

Check your fuses, i have had this happen to me, also, turn ignition key to on, but do not start. then with foot on brake pedal move transmission to neutral. then start engine.this will usually allow you to then use your gears and drive this will also usually fix the problem of being stuck in park.

Make sure you press the brake down, and fairly hard. You must usually step on the brake in order to shift out of park. I just picked up an automatic after my stick vehicle and am still getting used to this.

I had the same problem. But it was either trying to put my car into gear or into park. The solution: I had to get a new gear cable.

I had a similar problem. I couldn't take my car out of park. The problem was a brake switch that is connected to the brake pedal. You normally step on the brake to place the car in gear. If the switch goes out and you step on the brake the trans will not engage. Don't know if this is same situation with your car.

You may not have any problem at all. Your wife might have put the car in park and let the car roll before engaging the hand brake. If your car rolled while in park and the weight of the car leaned on the parking brake you may need to push the car a little bit before it can get out of park. depending on the car the push may need to be a little or a lot. Next time follow this as a parking routine: reverse or drive into parking spot, stop, with foot still on the brake pedal put car in park and engage hand brake fully so that car doesn't roll. Remove foot from brake pedal. This should stop that problem.

On my 1994 Toyota Corolla, when I had this problem and couldn't get the gear shift to budge, the tow truck driver showed me an override switch, which was located above the gear shift under a plastic tab. ( You need something like a key or screwdriver to depress it, but it gets you out of park and I was able to drive to the garage to get the "brake light service switch" fixed. It's a temporary fix, but it works!

this all depends on what make of car and year as well it could be a fuse, to the relay that sits under the break petal always by the manual for the car you own at like discount autos they have many easy useful charts inside with a simple useful trouble shooting guide i have one for two of my for cars i am still searching for my buick rivi. book cant find the one i want but you must go by the working manual first to get an understanding of what your doing with a car

Shortly after submitting a similar question to this one, I went out to my car and started messing around with the fuses and tran cable. It ended up being the tran cable shorting out from the cold. I detached the cable and reattached it and my car went into gear. So in my case it was the tran cable that was the problem.

I too had the dillema of the clk430 shifter stuck in park. And as odd as it sounds hitting the top of the shifter knob while appling the brake pedal does actually work. I'm sure there is an underlying problem to this but in a tough situation it did work.

Your transmisison dipstick will also tell you what type to use, along with the owners manual....
