I put my 2005 Escape into the Dealership. They found that a corroded connection was the problem. In my case the connection plug which connects all the wiring to the fuse box leads were corroded. This connector is located under the dash. It took them 2 days to find the problem. They replaced the connector housing and had to splice about 30 wires. The light on the dash doesn't blink anymore, but I have yet to test the actual 4WD operation.
