The check engine light (service engine soon) comes on and stays on when a problem is detected by the self diagnosis system of your vehicle. Generally, the problem is in the emissions or something that is affecting the effectiveness of the emissions, but other causes can trigger the light to come on, too. To determine the cause, the vehicle will need to be taken to a parts store or a shop that has an OBD2 scanner, or for 1995 and earlier models, an OBD1 scanner, While a scanner will not give you the magic answer, it will give you a code that narrows down the problem area.
It means there is a problem with the emissions system. Seek professional help.
the check engine light comes on for many reason or many parts usally emmision related.
By fixing whatever is wrong. The light only comes on when there is a problem. Fix it, and three drive-cycles later the light will go out on its own.

A fair price for a Hyundai Elantra is about $24,000 if it is fully loaded and comes with all of the standard options as well as an automatic transmission.
I have a 2004 Hyundai elantra and it acts like 4wd truck when it comes to snow. My driveway is very steep and when we got 6 inches of snow it went up and down it without spinning or getting stuck
When my check engine light comes on, it is caused by the temperature sensor not working. As soon as the light comes on, my temperature drops to cool. If the light goes out, the temp gauge returns to normal.
I know on a 2002 and 2003 that it is located on the end of the cylinder head to the right if you are at the front of the car looking at the engine. My lower radiator hose comes up and connects to the round housing that covers it.

There are several kinds of malfunction lights on the dashboard of a Hyundai Elantra (and this is true on all Hyundai models). Some are comparatively minor, such as the one for "tire pressure is too low"-- and all it means is you should check the air in your tires at the nearest gas station. Or if the "check oil" light comes on, this means you are low on oil and any service station can put some oil in. Sometimes, especially when the car is new, a malfunction light called a "check engine light" may come on for no apparent reason. If the car is running fine, it could just means there's a problem with a sensor and the car's computer system needs to be re-set, which the dealer can take care of. But if the car suddenly is running rough, or it's barely running at all, the "check engine" light could indicate a more serious problem with the generator or the car's electrical system. You need to contact the dealer right away, and the service department can tell you what you should do. [Your Hyundai should have a manual that explains all the lights; if you don't have it, there are versions online.]
On my 2000 Hyundai Elantra, you can access the license plate lights from the outside. You use a flathead to pop out the right side of the light, twist the back end (where the wire comes out) and the part with the bulb comes out. Pull it out, slide the new bulb in, retwist it into its container and pop the light back in place. Repeat for other side. Cost me $3 for the bulbs and took me about 5 min to do.
