I'm not sure but i think all switches 2xxx (2960) are layer 2 switches
On the contrary, the Cisco Catalyst 2960 is a very well-known product. This switch is widely used in many small businesses. There are few which are unhappy with this switch.
Depending on the size of the network and actual traffic requirements technically a "core layer switch" can scale from a 2960 all the way up to and beyond a 6500.
