an ascarid is an intestinal worm that averages 10 inches in length, found in horses in their lungs, liver and small intestine

The larvae burrow through to the lungs are then coughed up and swallowed again. On reaching the intestine they become mature adults growing up to 10 inches.

Most dewormers contain ingredients to kill these parasites, including the tapeworm active ingredient `pyrantel` . This ingredient dissolves tapeworm and at the same time paralizes the ascarid so it can no longer feed so soon dies and is passed through in the droppings.

Regular worming should ensure larvae are kept in check
