Its hard to tell who actually "invented" the novel since it was way long time back. But recently I read this book called " How to read novels like a Professor"by Thomas C. Foster and in his book on Pg 3, it said " Writer Joanot Martorell's Tirant lo Blanc - first publised in Valencia in 1490." It was the first European novel. Then later he says that there are two novels we generally think of as "first," one is La Princesse de Clèves by Madame de La Fayette published in 1678 and another is Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes published in 1605.
