Chances are you’ll do quite a bit of writing during your college career. If you’re not a stellar writer when you start school, don’t worry, but do take action. There are many things you can do to improve your writing. Moreover, most college campuses have writing centers staffed with instructors and tutors who can help you improve your writing skills. (Typically you do not need to pay extra for these services; they are included in the cost of tuition). If you struggle with writing, be sure to take full advantage of your campus’ writing center.

Here are three tried and true tips for becoming a better writer:

• Pay attention to the assignment guidelines. Make sure you fully understand the assignment before you begin writing. When you finish your first draft, read through it to make sure it addresses all of the elements of the assignment. If you are confused, be sure to clarify the assignment with your professor or T.A.
• Pay attention to organization. If you have trouble organizing your thoughts and putting them down on paper, try making an outline before you write your paper. This will help you stay on track and stay organized while writing. When you’re done with your first draft, read through it concentrating on organization only. Ask yourself the following questions: Does the flow make sense? Is it easy to follow? Are the transitions from one thought to another clear? Are the paragraph breaks in appropriate places? Is there a clear introduction and conclusion?
• Proofread your paper--- several times. Once you have a draft that you are happy with (and meets all of the assignment requirements), proofread it with an eagle eye. Look for spelling mistakes, grammar mistakes and organization flaws. Better yet, swap your paper with a classmate and give each other specific feedback to improve the paper you are working on and your writing style in general.
