Reflexology is a type of massage that focuses on using reflex points in the hands, feet and head to improve overall health via energy pathways in the body. Reflexology massage is most commonly applied to the feet where specific reflex points are connected to the body's other organs and glands.

People receive reflexology bodywork treatments for several reasons, and practitioners believe that by applying pressure to reflex points they can send the body signals via the central nervous system to promote health, healing and eliminate stress.

Types of Reflexology Treatments:

  • Meridian Therapy: This kind of reflexology treatment helps control the energy balance and flow throughout the body by stimulating the body's acupuncture points. More specifically, it focuses on the energy paths or meridians to maintain balance between the body, emotions, and spirit.
  • Vacuflex: In the 1970s this variation of foot reflexology treatment was made popular by a Danish reflexologist named Inge Dougans. It is also sometimes known as VRS, and the goal of this type of body work is to treat energy meridians throughout the body.
  • Universal Method: The universal method seeks to treat the body as a whole. Total health is achieved only when the mind, body, and spirit are in total balance. An important component of this reflexology treatment method is the assertion that bad memories, traumatic life events, and unresolved emotions are at the root of disease and health conditions.
  • Zone Therapy: This is the simplest type of reflexology treatment, utilizing the application and removal of pressure at the fingers and toes which are associated with five different zones on the rest of the body. The goal of zone therapy is to return balance to each of the five zones.

Reflexology charts can be very complex. They illustrate the different connections that are thought to exist between reflex points in the hands and feet and other internal organs and glands. For instance, by stimulating the heel of the foot, practitioners believe they can promote healing in the lower back and intestines.
