The major thing that was wrong with John was that he was in the shadow of Richard. The Lionheart, as Richard was known, was a mighty crusader, and person of enormous vigor and physical power. In other words, hero-stuff. This was despite (or maybe because) he hardly spent any of his kingship actually in England, so nobody there had much opportunity to complain about him. During John's regency, England was cruelly taxed, but the taxes were to pay for Richard's wars and his ransom (he got captured by his supposed allies). Richard got the glory and John got the blame.
