A certified nurse assistant (CNA) is someone who works with nurses as a direct caregiver to patients. CNAs often are responsible for checking vitals, bathing and feeding patients, and taking care of any needs they may have. To become a CNA, you must have certification of your training. Here are some helpful tips to becoming a CNA.

1. Learn about the job.

Certified nursing assistants often work for patients who require long-term care. Many times, these are in nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, or mental health facilities. Sometimes the work can be challenging, but it is also rewarding. Entry-level CNAs should expect to earn around $24,000.

2. Check requirements for certification.

Requirements for CNA certification vary from state to state, so always check to see which requirements you must meet. Some programs require a high school education or a GED, but others do not. Also, some facilities require students to be 18 or older, while some high schools offer certification programs to students 16 or older.

3. Choose how you will be certified.

There are a couple of ways that CNAs can receive certification. One way is to go through a school program that offers CNA certifications. Another way is more hands-on, working at a rehab or nursing facility that offers certifications as well. Often, if you have a job lined up when you are finished with your training, you will be reimbursed for the cost of your education. These programs usually last 6-12 weeks.

4. Sign up for your course.

If you choose to go through a college for your certification, you must apply to that college and the CNA program. These usually cost around $300 to $600. If you are going through your current or future employer, you must speak with your employer for more information on training and costs.

5. Apply for Employment

If you have not gone through an employer for CNA certification, it is time to apply for a CNA position. Ideas include hospitals, rehab centers, nursing homes, mental facilities, etc. These will be your best bet for a new job as a CNA. If you are already employed, you are certified and able to handle new situations at the workplace!
