Try considering: When it was written, the effect it had at the time, who wrote it, what influenced them to write it, the people they were writing to or for and what the author wanted to result from the essay. Or consider:

1.)Subject

2.)Occasion

3.)Audience

4.)Purpose

5.)Significance

6.)Tone, and possibly what they left out of the essay and why they left it out. (My teachers call this SOAPSTone.)
