The terms SDU as well as MDU are used in the context of Broadband connections, and more specifically in the context of Fiber Optics networks.

SDU stands for Single Dwelling Unit, and MDU stands for Multi Dwelling Unit.

When analysing or designing Fiber Optics networks of a technology FTTx (Fiber-To-The-x, e.g. FTTH: Fiber-To-The-Home, FTTB: Fiber-To-The-Building etc.) one needs to know where the fiber optic cable ends: at the basement of a building or inside a house or appartment. The cabling and equipment requirements to connect a single home (SDU) are different than those used to connect all the appartments in a multi-level building (MDU). Hence the need for distinction between the dwelling types of the end users of fiber optic connections.

PDU stands for Power Distribution Unit. This is used inside data centers.

PDU is something like information which delivered through the network layer. For the network to understand what layer is being disscussed,a single letter prefixed is added to the PDU.Like-

A. LPDU-Communication for the Datalink Layer

B. NPDU-Communication for the Network Layer

C. TPDU-Communication for the Transport Layer

In networking, PDU means "protocol data unit", and it is the generic name of the "packets" of data used at different levels of the network. Using the numbering of the OSI layers:

At layer 2, the PDUs are called "frame". Example: An Ethernet frame, a frame-relay frame.

At layer 3, the PDUs are called "packets". Example: An IP packet.

At layer 4, the PDUs are called "segments". Example: A TCP segment, a UDP segment.

What is data unit formation techniques in osi reference model?

Layer N in the model accepts data from the next higher layer, layer N+1, in the form of a block of data known as a service data unit (SDU). To deliver this SDU to the destination system, a layer N protocol is used between the layer N entity in the source system and the layer N entity in the destination system. The source protocol entity encapsulates the SDU by adding a header and possibly a trailer, containing protocol control information, such as source and destination address and error check codes. The SDU plus header and trailer is known as a protocol data unit (PDU). An SDU may be broken up into multiple chunks and sent out in multiple PDUs, or multiple SDUs may be aggregated and send out in a single PDU, if the protocol allows it.
