if it is cranking but wont start check for spark, fuel, air and compression.

You need a spark, a fuel / air mixture supply to have combustion in the combustion chamber.
If a 1997 Nissan Maxima will crank but will not start, there could be a problem with the fuel pump. Another possibility is an issue with the ignition switch.
It's inside the fuel tank. You'll have to drop the fuel tank to get at it. Here's hoping that you're nearly out of fuel! FriPilot

If it is Distributeless Ignition check you ignition module
Sounds like a fuel problem. Check your fuel filter. Make sure that gas is getting to the engine.
Have you tried spraying gas intothe breather. Does it have tbi or multi-port? How about the fuel regulator. How much pressure does the fuel rail have ?
i have one and if it wont start change the oil
