That happened to me several times. The thing is, with the Cavalier CD player (99-01) they have a very difficult time playing discs even slightly scratched. Make sure you have a clean CD. Also, depending on the temperature, it may not read properly in extreme heat or cold. Finally, if all else fails, open the fuse box to the left of the dashboard (open your drivers door) and remove the fuse for the stereo. Put it back in, the stereo will reset itself. Worked for me.
